Modern IP cameras get both data and power from a single network cable using Power over Ethernet (PoE). It is elegant and clean — but only if the underlying network is designed properly. Here are the practices that keep IP CCTV reliable.
Size the PoE power budget
Every PoE switch has a total power budget shared across its ports. Add up each camera's draw (more for PTZ and heaters) and leave headroom — never load a switch to its limit. Under-powered cameras reboot randomly, which is maddening to diagnose.
Cable correctly
- Use quality CAT6 for solid gigabit and PoE performance.
- Respect the 100m Ethernet limit; use PoE extenders or fibre for longer runs.
- Terminate properly — poor crimping is the most common cause of flaky cameras.
Plan bandwidth and storage
High-resolution cameras generate serious data. Design switch uplinks and recorder bandwidth for the total stream load, and size storage for your required retention days at the resolution and frame rate you will actually run.
Segregate and protect
- Put cameras on a dedicated VLAN, isolated from office traffic.
- Use managed switches for monitoring and control.
- Protect switches and recorders with UPS backup so footage survives power cuts.
