Setting up a new office, or finally fixing a network that everyone complains about? WiFi and structured cabling are two of the least understood line items in an office fit-out budget — mainly because "office network" can mean a ₹25,000 job or a ₹3,00,000 one, depending entirely on scope. Here is what Chennai SMBs typically pay in 2026, and what decides which end of that range you land on.

Small office (up to 10 users): ₹25,000 – ₹45,000

Covers a single wireless access point sized for the space, basic CAT6 cabling to a handful of fixed desks or a printer, and a small unmanaged switch. This suits a compact office or a satellite branch where the network only needs to be reliable, not sophisticated.

Mid-size office (25–50 users): ₹80,000 – ₹1,80,000

This is where most growing Chennai businesses land, and typically includes:

  • Multiple access points for even coverage across the floor, avoiding dead zones near lifts, stairwells or thick walls.
  • Proper structured CAT6 cabling to every fixed workstation, meeting room and printer point — not just wireless everywhere.
  • A patch panel and rack cabinet, so cabling is organised, labelled and serviceable instead of a tangle behind a desk.
  • A managed switch, allowing you to segment guest WiFi from internal traffic and prioritise voice/video calls.

Enterprise / multi-floor deployment: ₹3,00,000 and up

Larger or multi-floor offices need a network designed as infrastructure, not an afterthought:

  • Fibre backbone between floors or buildings, with copper cabling only for the final run to each desk.
  • Redundant access points and switches, so a single hardware failure doesn't take down a whole floor.
  • VLAN segmentation separating staff, guest, CCTV and voice traffic for both security and performance.
  • Centralised network monitoring, so IT can spot and fix issues before staff even notice them.

What moves the price within any tier

  • Cable run distances — a long, narrow floor plate or a building with false ceilings and no existing conduit costs more to cable than an open-plan space with easy routing.
  • Access point count and placement — WiFi coverage is about placement, not just device count; a proper site survey often finds you need fewer, better-placed APs than an initial guess assumes.
  • Managed vs unmanaged switching — managed switches cost more but let you control, monitor and segment traffic, which matters the moment you add CCTV, VoIP phones or guest WiFi.
  • Cable category — CAT6 comfortably handles gigabit speeds for years to come; CAT5e is cheaper but a false economy in a space you plan to keep for a while.

The mistake we see most often

The single biggest budgeting mistake is treating WiFi as a replacement for structured cabling rather than a complement to it. Wireless is convenient for laptops and phones, but fixed workstations, printers, meeting-room displays and CCTV cameras all perform better — and far more reliably — on a physical cable. A network designed around "just add more WiFi routers" tends to be both more expensive over time and less stable than one built around a proper cabled backbone with WiFi layered on top for mobility.

Planning for growth

As with CCTV, a small allowance for future capacity is usually worth the modest extra cost at install time: running one or two spare cable drops to likely future desks, or choosing a switch with a few free ports, is far cheaper than an emergency re-cabling job six months after you've added staff.

How long installation actually takes

For a small office, cabling and access-point installation is usually a one-day job. A mid-size office with a full patch panel, rack and 25–50 cable drops typically takes 2–4 working days depending on ceiling access and how much of the run is exposed versus concealed. Enterprise, multi-floor jobs with a fibre backbone are scoped and scheduled individually, often phased floor-by-floor so the business keeps running throughout.

Minimising disruption to a working office

Very few businesses can shut down for a network upgrade, so we typically schedule cabling work outside peak hours or in phases — one section or floor at a time — so staff always have a working connection while the rest of the space is upgraded. For offices that can't tolerate any WiFi downtime, we bring up new access points alongside the existing network first, then cut over once coverage is confirmed, rather than taking the old network offline before the new one is proven.

Structured cabling standards worth asking about

If you're comparing quotes, it's reasonable to ask whether the cabling follows recognised structured cabling practice — proper labelling at both ends of every cable run, a patch panel rather than cables running directly into switches, and cable testing/certification after installation to confirm every run actually performs at the speed it's rated for. These aren't extras; they're what separates a network you can troubleshoot in five minutes from one where a single fault takes an afternoon to trace.

Combining CCTV, WiFi and voice on one network

Most Chennai offices we work with eventually run CCTV, WiFi and VoIP phones over the same physical cabling — which is efficient, but only if the network is segmented properly from the start. Cameras on their own VLAN keep video traffic from slowing down staff WiFi during peak hours, and prioritising voice traffic (QoS) keeps calls clear even when someone's uploading a large file elsewhere on the network. Planning for this combination upfront, rather than bolting CCTV or VoIP onto a network designed only for laptops, is usually the difference between a network that "just works" and one that needs constant firefighting.
