Dependable fire detection for small and mid-sized buildings

A conventional fire alarm system divides a building into zones — a floor, a wing or a group of rooms — and wires every detector and manual call point in that zone back to one circuit on the control panel. When any device on the circuit operates, the panel shows which zone is in alarm and sounds the hooters across the building.

It is the simplest and most economical fire alarm design, and for apartments, shops, showrooms, schools, clinics, small offices and compact factories it is often all that is needed. RS Technologies designs, installs and maintains conventional fire alarm systems across Chennai, and we will tell you plainly when your building is better served by an addressable system instead.

Conventional or addressable — how to decide

The difference is how precisely the panel can tell you where the fire is. A conventional panel identifies the zone; an addressable panel identifies the exact detector. In a small building with a few zones, knowing the zone is enough to find the source within seconds. In a large building, a zone can cover dozens of rooms, and searching them wastes the time that matters most.

  • Choose conventional for buildings with a modest number of rooms, floors and devices
  • Choose addressable for large or multi-storey buildings, hospitals, hotels, malls and big factories
  • Choose addressable when you need detailed event logs or integration with other building systems

What a complete system includes

  • Conventional fire alarm control panel sized for the number of zones, with battery backup
  • Smoke detectors for rooms, corridors and lobbies; heat detectors for kitchens and dusty areas
  • Manual call points (break-glass units) at exits and along escape routes
  • Hooters and strobe lights so the alarm is heard and seen everywhere in the building
  • Fire-rated cabling laid in conduit, with each zone clearly labelled at the panel
  • Optional outputs to release access-controlled doors or signal other systems in an alarm

How we install it

Every job starts with a free site survey. We walk the building, note ceiling heights, room uses and escape routes, and plan zones so that each one is easy to search. The written quote lists every device and where it goes. During installation we keep cable runs neat and protected, then test every detector and call point in front of you, show your staff how to read the panel, silence and reset an alarm, and explain what the fault lights mean.

Fire safety requirements in Tamil Nadu follow the National Building Code of India and are enforced by Tamil Nadu Fire and Rescue Services. Requirements depend on the building’s use, height and area, and we design to suit them.

Keeping it working: testing and AMC

A fire alarm is only useful if it works on the one day it is needed. Batteries age, detectors collect dust and cables get damaged during renovation work. Our annual maintenance contracts cover periodic testing of detectors, call points and hooters, battery checks and fault rectification, with a service record you can show during inspections.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Where is a conventional fire alarm panel suitable?

Small and mid-sized buildings such as apartments, shops, showrooms, schools, clinics, small offices and compact factories, where a zone-level alarm is enough to find the source quickly.

Will the alarm work during a power cut?

Yes. The panel has a standby battery that keeps the system running through power cuts. We size the battery for the system and check it during maintenance visits.

Can a conventional system be upgraded to addressable later?

Usually the panel and detectors are replaced, but well-laid cable routes can often be reused. If you expect the building to grow, we will discuss this before installation.

How often should the system be tested?

Regularly — a quick check of the panel by your staff, and periodic testing of detectors, call points, hooters and batteries by a technician. Our AMC covers the technician visits.

Do you service systems installed by other companies?

Yes. We inspect the existing system first and tell you honestly what can be repaired and what needs replacing.
