The earliest warning a building can have

Most fires smoulder and produce smoke well before flames take hold. A smoke detector placed in the right spot gives people those extra minutes to act — to put out a small fire, switch off power or get everyone out. RS Technologies supplies, installs and maintains smoke detectors for homes, apartments, shops, offices, hospitals, hotels, warehouses and factories across Chennai.

Standalone alarms or a connected system

Standalone smoke alarms are battery-powered units that sound on their own. They suit individual flats and small homes. In offices, commercial buildings and industrial sites, smoke detectors are wired to a fire alarm control panel, which raises the alarm across the whole building, shows where the smoke was detected and keeps a record of events.

Choosing the right detector for each room

  • Optical (photoelectric) smoke detectors — the standard choice for bedrooms, offices, corridors and lobbies
  • Heat detectors — for kitchens, generator rooms and dusty areas, where smoke detectors would raise false alarms
  • Multi-sensor detectors — combine smoke and heat sensing for better accuracy in mixed-use spaces
  • Beam smoke detectors — cover long, high-roof spaces such as warehouses and atriums

Placement matters as much as the detector

A detector in the wrong place can miss a fire or trigger constant false alarms. During the free site survey we look at ceiling height and shape, air-conditioning vents and fans (which push smoke away), beams that block smoke spread, and how each room is used. Detectors are spaced to cover the whole area, kept clear of vents and corners, and chosen to suit the conditions — for example, never a smoke detector directly above a cooking range.

High-roof warehouses and factories need special attention, because smoke cools and spreads out before it reaches the roof. There we may combine beam detectors with point detectors at lower levels.

Testing, cleaning and replacement

Dust, insects and humidity slowly reduce a detector’s sensitivity, and Chennai’s climate is hard on electronics. Detectors should be tested periodically, cleaned, and replaced at the end of their service life as stated by the manufacturer. Standalone alarms also need fresh batteries. Our fire alarm AMC covers detector testing and cleaning along with the rest of the system.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

How many smoke detectors do I need?

It depends on room sizes, ceiling heights and layout. Each detector covers a limited area, and separate rooms usually need their own. We work out the number during the free site survey.

Why does my smoke detector give false alarms?

Common causes are dust, insects, steam, cooking fumes or a detector placed near an AC vent. Cleaning, relocating the detector or switching to a heat or multi-sensor detector usually solves it.

Can smoke detectors be added to my existing fire alarm panel?

Usually, yes, as long as the panel has capacity and the detectors are compatible with it. We check the panel before quoting.

Do smoke detectors work during a power cut?

Detectors connected to a fire alarm panel run on the panel’s backup battery. Standalone alarms run on their own batteries.

Should my kitchen have a smoke detector?

Usually not directly — cooking smoke causes false alarms. A heat detector is the normal choice for kitchens, with smoke detectors in the rooms and corridors around them.
