Your office lobby is your first line of defence. Pedestrian entrance control — turnstiles, flap barriers and speed gates — ensures only authorised people enter, while keeping the morning rush flowing smoothly. Here is how the options compare, and what to plan for before you choose.

Tripod turnstiles

The robust, cost-effective workhorse. Three rotating arms allow one person through per valid card or biometric scan. Perfect for factories, stadiums, canteens and back-of-house entries where durability matters more than aesthetics.

Full-height turnstiles

A floor-to-ceiling rotating gate that can't be climbed over or ducked under. These are used at factory perimeters, construction sites and unmanned entrances, often outdoors, where security matters more than appearance and there's no guard to watch the lane.

Flap barriers

Sleek retractable "flaps" that retract for authorised users and close behind them. Faster and more elegant than tripods, they suit corporate lobbies and reception areas where appearance counts. Wide lanes accommodate luggage and accessibility needs.

Speed gates

The premium tier — fast, near-silent glass gates with sophisticated anti-tailgating sensors. Ideal for headquarters, banks and high-security buildings that want both throughput and a strong first impression.

Planning for peak hours

The number of lanes matters more than the model. A lobby that works perfectly at 11 AM can create a queue out of the door at 9 AM, or at a factory shift change when hundreds of people arrive within minutes. When planning, think about:

• Peak arrivals — how many people come through in the busiest 15 minutes, not the whole day.

• Exit flow — whether exits need separate lanes, or can share entry lanes in reverse.

Accessibility and deliveries

At least one wide lane is essential — for wheelchair users, people with prams, and staff moving trolleys, parcels or equipment. Many flap barriers and speed gates offer a wide-lane option in the same style as the standard lanes, so the lobby looks consistent.

Fire safety: non-negotiable

Every pedestrian barrier must open automatically when the fire alarm triggers, and have a manual override for emergencies. This needs a proper connection between the barriers and the fire alarm panel, tested as part of your regular fire drills. In a building with a fire NOC, it's also part of what inspectors will look at.

Plan it before the flooring goes down

Turnstiles and flap barriers are fixed to the floor and need power and data cables running underneath them. Planning their position before the lobby flooring is laid avoids cutting into finished marble or granite later. If you're fitting out a new lobby, involve your access control installer at the design stage.

Indoor or outdoor?

Most flap barriers and speed gates are designed for indoor lobbies. For entrances exposed to rain and sun — factory gates, open-air campuses — choose models built for outdoor use, or provide a canopy over the lanes.

Visitors
