Fire Extinguisher Types and AMC: A Facility Manager’s Guide

A fire extinguisher is only useful if it is the right type, in the right place, and in working order. Get any of those wrong and your first line of defence fails exactly when you need it. Here is what every facility manager — and every homeowner — should know.

Match the extinguisher to the fire

• ABC dry powder — the versatile all-rounder for solids, liquids and gases; common in offices and general areas.
• CO₂ — for electrical fires and server rooms; leaves no residue.
• Water — for ordinary combustibles like paper and wood (never on electrical or oil fires).
• Foam — for flammable liquids.
• Kitchen (wet chemical) — specifically for cooking-oil fires in commercial kitchens.

Using the wrong type — water on an electrical or oil fire, for example — can spread the fire or cause injury. Place the correct type for each area's risk.

Read the label and the gauge

Every extinguisher carries a label showing what types of fire it's suitable for, and most have a pressure gauge. The needle should sit in the green zone. If it's in the red — either side — the extinguisher needs attention. It takes two seconds to check, and it's the simplest safety habit there is.

How to use one: remember PASS

In an emergency, people freeze. A simple four-step method helps:

• Pull the safety pin.
• Aim the nozzle at the base of the fire, not the flames.
• Squeeze the handle.
• Sweep from side to side until the fire is out.

And always keep your back to a clear exit. An extinguisher is for small, early fires — if the fire is spreading or the room is filling with smoke, get out and call the fire service on 101.

Placement basics

• Mount on clearly visible, accessible escape routes — not hidden behind doors or stock.
• Place the right type near its risk (CO₂ by electrical panels, wet chemical in kitchens).
• Keep travel distance to the nearest extinguisher short.
• Mount at a height people can easily reach, with clear signage above.

Chennai conditions

Coastal air and humidity cause cylinders, valves and brackets to rust, particularly near the sea or in open areas. Extinguishers left in direct sun on terraces or in car parks also deteriorate faster. Keep them in shaded, protected spots, and look out for rust or damage during checks.

What regular checks involve

• Monthly visual check — in place, pin and seal intact, gauge in the green, no visible damage.
• Refill after any use — even a short burst partly empties the cylinder and can let pressure leak away.
• Periodic servicing — a technician inspects and refills extinguishers at the intervals set by the relevant standard.
• Pressure testing of the cylinder at longer intervals, to confirm it can still safely hold pressure.

Why an AMC is non-negotiable

Extinguishers lose pressure, expire and get tampered with. Extinguishers aren't only for businesses. A small ABC or kitchen extinguisher near — but not directly beside — the stove is one of the most useful safety items a home can have. Train your people

The best equipment is wasted if nobody knows how to use it. A short, hands-on training session — ideally with a real extinguisher discharged safely outdoors — builds the confidence people need to act quickly. Pair it with regular fire drills so staff know the escape routes too.
